Mainland, on film

Mornings in temple gardens, trains threading the country, the slow grain of late-summer light. A handful of rolls from a few weeks spent walking and looking.

Commuters passing through the ticket gates at Nakano Station, Tokyo
Terraced fields on a green hillside, a farmer in a straw hat at his small truck on the lane below
Steel roof structure spanning the atrium of Osaka Station, daylight falling through the skylights
Quiet residential side street with winding double white lines and a 20 km/h marking on the asphalt
Young man on a bicycle rounding a guardrail curve on a country road
Stepped concrete high-rise with plants overflowing from every terrace
Woman with a phone crossing the dim forecourt of Osaka Station beneath the illuminated clock
Woman looking at her phone on an elevated platform, standing on painted queue footprints
Two friends with paper shopping bags and a bicycle at a guardrail, looking out over the sea
Night rain pouring on the square at Shinjuku Station's east exit, electronics signs glowing through the mist
Traveller with a rolling suitcase looking up while crossing a busy square in Shibuya

South to the islands

Warmer air, the sea never far off. A shorter set from Okinawa. Quieter streets, salt light, and the easy pace of the southern islands.

Open sea under a line of cumulus clouds on the horizon
Vine with round leaves climbing a tree trunk in dense subtropical forest
Dog leaning out of the window of a small truck on a mountain road
Empty coastal road curving uphill past windswept pines, a 30 km/h sign at the bend
Deserted beach with young pandanus plants in the sand, waves breaking around dark rocks
Footprints crossing pale sand between bleached coral fragments
Family of three searching the shoreline at dusk, two rocky islets across the still water

The same attention to place and passing moments shapes how I photograph weddings.
